Background of the Study
Women-led Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have become a critical part of the Nigerian economy, contributing significantly to employment, innovation, and economic diversification. Despite their importance, many women entrepreneurs face substantial challenges in managing their businesses, particularly in the areas of financial management and accounting. Financial literacy, which refers to the understanding of basic financial principles such as budgeting, saving, investment, and financial planning, is vital for the success and growth of SMEs. However, a significant gap in financial literacy exists among women entrepreneurs in Nigeria, especially in the northern region, such as Kaduna State. The lack of financial literacy among women-led SMEs often results in poor financial decision-making, inadequate budgeting, inaccurate record-keeping, and a general lack of financial accountability, which can hinder business growth. This study seeks to explore the impact of financial literacy on accounting practices among women-led SMEs in Kaduna State, examining how financial knowledge affects business practices and long-term sustainability.
Statement of the Problem
Financial literacy is essential for effective accounting practices, and women entrepreneurs in Nigeria’s Kaduna State face unique challenges in acquiring financial knowledge. Many women in the region do not have access to formal financial education or training, which results in poor accounting practices such as inaccurate financial reporting, inefficient cost management, and inadequate financial planning. This lack of financial literacy reduces their ability to make informed business decisions and diminishes their competitiveness in the marketplace. Despite the critical role that financial literacy plays in ensuring the success of women-led SMEs, there is limited research on the specific impact of financial literacy on accounting practices among women entrepreneurs in Kaduna State. This study aims to investigate how financial literacy influences the accounting practices of women-led SMEs and how it can be enhanced to improve business performance.
